The notchback sedan S40 and the station wagon V50 replaced the duo S40/V40 from 2003. The colorful range of engines ranges from the 1.6 with 74 kW and two FlexFuel engines to the D5 and T5, which cover the higher performance ranges of diesel and petrol engines. However, when changing the oil, it doesn't matter which engine your Volvo S40 has because as with every combustion engine, residues from the combustion chambers get into the oil circuit during operation, which over time change the consistency of the engine oil and deteriorate its quality. If the engine oil is too worn, it cannot optimally protect your Volvo's engine from damage.
In the Volvo S40, the oil needs to be changed once a year or after a maximum mileage – whichever comes first. Depending on the engine, the type of fuel and the model year, this mileage can be 10,000, 20,000 or 30,000 km. The on-board computer shows on the dashboard when the next service is due for your Volvo S40.
If you often drive your Volvo in the mountains or in an area with a damp climate, then the maintenance and therefore the oil change must be carried out earlier. Because under these circumstances, the engine oil wears out faster.
Always follow Volvo's oil change guidelines for your S40. Because when the engine oil is worn out, in the worst case the lubricating film between the piston and the cylinder can tear. Within fractions of a second, the piston then seizes up in the cylinder and you have major engine damage.
Numerous engines were installed in the Volvo S40, each of which has an individual design. As a result, these machines hold very different amounts of engine oil. For example, the 130 kW Volvo S40 II D4 needs 5.9 litres of engine oil. A Volvo V50 1.6 D with 80 kW comes with 3.7 litres. All engines used in the S40 are within these filling quantities.
We have listed all the Volvo S40 models and engine types in the following table, as well as the correct engine oil grade for each of the cars. You can use the search and filter to easily find the right engine oil for your Volvo S40.

Volvo makes clear specifications for changing the transmission oil in the S40 and V50. For example, for a 2.4 125 kW 01/2004 to 05/2010, the following instructions apply if the vehicle is used regularly as a taxi or towing vehicle: Up to the year of manufacture 2004, the transmission oil in the automatic transmission should be changed every 80,000 km/4 years, from 2005 up to 2007 every 60,000 km/3 years and from model year 2008 every 60,000 km/2 years.
As a result of the shifting processes, fine metal dust caused by wear and tear accumulates in the transmission over time, which massively clogs the precise gears. In a long-term test, the manufacturer checks the wear and tear of the gear oil and sets a change interval accordingly. You should therefore always adhere to the intervals for changing the transmission oil, because damage to the transmission is one of the most expensive repairs on your Volvo. If there are no change intervals for your gearbox, then you can usually assume that it will be filled for life. Then you replace the transmission oil at the latest when the gears no longer shift properly or every 180,000 km/10 years, which corresponds to an average car life.
Regularly checking and changing your Volvo S40 oil is really important. Every time you start and run your car, very fine by-products from the combustion in the engine will be collected in the engine oil. This is one of the reasons why over time the oil goes black. If these contaminants build up too much and exceed the capacity of the oil it can have a negative impact on your car’s overall efficiency and actually effect its performance as it creates sludge and increased wear in the engine block.
