BMW 6 Series Oil Type Finder

The BMW 6 Series is an upper mid-range passenger car that has been built by the German manufacturer since 1975.

The 6 Series is available in the following series:

• The first 6 series (October 1975-April 1989) is called the BMW 6 Series E24
• The second 6 Series (August 2003-July 2010) is called BMW 6 Series E63 Coupé and E64 Cabriolet
• The third 6 Series (March 2011-April 2018) is called BMW 6 Series F12 Cabriolet, BMW 6 Series F13 Coupé and BMW 6 Series F06 Gran Coupé
• The fourth 6 Series (since November 2017) is called the BMW 6 Series G32 Gran Turismo

What is the approved oil for a BMW?

The engines of the BMW 6 Series should always be filled with engine oil approved by the manufacturer - our recommendation for most engines is a 5W-30 oil (LL) with BMW Longlife 04 approval but check before your your specific model and year.

Every engine oil will have its viscosity grade labelled on the packaging. This will look something like 0W-20, 5W-30 or 5W-40. This grading is used to measure how thick / fluid the oil is and help ensure you buy the right oil for your car. The lower the viscosity grade of the oil, the more fluid and thinner it will be than those with a high grade (higher numbers) which will be much less running and thick.
