Check Oil Type, Grade And Viscosity For BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series is a model series in the upper middle class. It has been on offer since the summer of 1972 and has since established itself well, not only in Germany.
The 5 Series is available in the following series:
• BMW E12 (September 1972 -July 1981) available as a sedan
• BMW E28 (July 1981-December 1987) available as a sedan
• BMW E34 (December 1987 -December 1995) available in sedan and estate versions
• BMW E39 (September 1995 to June 2003) available in sedan and estate versions
• BMW E60 (July 2003 to March 2010) available in sedan and station wagon
• BMW F10 (January 2010 to January 2017) available in sedan and station wagon
• BMW G30 (since February 2017) available as a sedan and station wagon
• A6 C8 (since 2018)
The 5 Series E60 was available between 2003 and 2010 as a sedan and touring variant. It started with the 520i, which had a four-cylinder engine with 170 hp installed. 523i, 525i, 530i and 535i were powered by an inline six, 540i, 545i and 550i were delivered with a V8 petrol engine.
The M5 version was also available with a 507 hp V10 engine. A four or six-cylinder turbo diesel was installed in the 520d, 525d, 530d and 535d.
Oil change interval: The BMW 5 Type E60 has a long-life oil change interval of 25,000 km or 30,000 km or every 24 months.
Oils and filling quantities: For the E60, an oil with BMW LongLife 01 or 04 approval is always required. For the small petrol engine you only need 4.25 litres of it. The large machines, regardless of whether they have a petrol engine or turbo diesel, have a capacity of between 6.5 and a maximum of 9.8 litres in the M model.
Savings Tip: DIY oil change for your BMW 5 Series is the most economical option, however not everyone wants to get their hands dirty. The BME 5 Type F10 was built between 2010 and 2017. Sedan and Touring were the available body styles. The entry-level model for the F10 was the 520i with its four-cylinder petrol engine. Six cylinders were installed in the 523i, 528i, 530i and 535i. The 550i and the M5 were equipped with eight-cylinder engines. The 518d, 520d and 525d were turbo diesels.
Oil change interval: A long-life oil change is possible with every BMW 5 type F10. According to the oil change interval, this must be done every 30,000 km or after 24 months.
Oils and filling quantities: Depending on the engine, you need between 5.0 and 9.5 litres of oil for the F10. More details can be found in the operating instructions for your respective model in a clear table.
The BMW 5 Type G30 has been on the market as a sedan and touring since 2017 . The 520i, 530i, 540i and 550i models, as well as the M version, use petrol engines with displacements between 2.0 and 4.4 litres. The 520d, 525d, 530d, 540d and the M 550d are available as turbo diesel.
Oil change interval: A long-life oil change must be carried out on all BMW 5 of the type G30 after 30,000 km or after 24 months.
Oils and filling quantities: Only engine oil approved by BMW with the specification BMW-LongLife 04 may be used for this. We recommend the Castrol engine oil 5L SAE 5W-30 with the appropriate BMW approval. I will normally be somewhere between 5.5 and 9.5 litres of oil for the different engines of the G30.
The various engines of the BMW 5 Series may only be used with engine oil that has manufacturer approval - we recommend a 5W30 oil with BMW Longlife-04 approval for many engines of the 5 Series. You can always find the relevant details of your engine in the BMW manual that came with with car. You should always make sure you use a oil which has BMW LongLife 04 approval.
How-to Guide: Checking Your BMW 5 Series Engine Oil
Step 1: Find the oil dipstick. It's usually a long skinny rod with a handle, near the front of the engine. Check your BMW 5 Series manual for the exact spot.
Step 2: Grab the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel, and put it back in place, making sure it's all the way in.
Step 3: Take out the dipstick again and check the oil level. It'll have markers showing the minimum and maximum. Your oil level should be in between these two markers. If it's below the minimum, add more oil. If it's above the maximum, remove some oil with a pump or baster.
