Audi A4 Oil Type Finder

The Audi A4 is an extremely popular vehicle throughout Europe, the UK and USA, especially the diesel models. Whether as a company car or a family car, it has been doing its job faithfully on the motorways, country roads and in the cities for decades.

With so many different options of engine oil out there, finding what the right oil for your Audi A4 may be a little confusing for a lot of people and can even be quite overwhelming. There are a wide number of brands manufacturing Audi A4 oil suitable for use in Audi petrol and TDI diesel engines. Some engine oil types are specifically designed for Audi A3 models such as the Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI, while other oils are designed for petrol engine models such as the Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI.

If the oil lamp lights up or the on-board computer annoys you with the message "Oil change now", it's time to top or or change your A4's engine oil.

Instructions For Topping up engine oil in Audi A4

  • 1) Find out what the correct oil type for your Audi A4 is and purchase the required amount.
  • 2) Unlatch the bonnet of your A4 and measure the oil level. Make a note of where the level is.
  • 3) Then carefully fill a little engine oil (approx. 100-150ml) into the Audi A4 oil nozzle.
  • 4) Be patient now for a short time before measuring the oil level again with the oil dipstick.
  • 5) Do not start the Audi A4 again until you have ensured that the oil level is at the normal level (indicated by the markings).

Between 2000 and 2004, the Audi A4 B6 (Type 8E) was available as a sedan and station wagon. The popular mid-size car was equipped with petrol engines, such as the 1.6, 1.8 Turbo, 2.0 FSI, 2.4, 3.0 and 4.2 litres in the Quattro. The proven 1.9 TDI and 2.5 TDI Turbo Diesel were also available. Changing the oil with the right type of oil is the most important service work that ensures high mileage.

What Oil For Audi A4?

Every engine oil will have its viscosity grade labelled on the packaging. This will look something like 0W-20, 5W-30 or 5W-40. This grading is used to measure how thick / fluid the oil is and help ensure you buy the right oil for your car. The lower the viscosity grade of the oil, the more fluid and thinner it will be than those with a high grade (higher numbers) which will be much less running and thick.

So which is the right Audi A4 Oil type to use?

Whether you are topping up your Audi A4's oil or its time to do a full oil change, it's really important that you use the correct type and grade of oil.

We have listed all the Audi A4 models and engine types in the following table, as well as the correct engine oil grade for each of the cars. You can use the search and filter to easily find the right engine oil for an Audi A4.

How to check oil level on the Audi A4 if the oil lamp comes on

You can easily assess your Audi A4's engine oil level using the infotainment system.

Firstly, ensure that your car is parked on a level surface and that the warm engine has been turned off. Afterward, switch on the ignition without starting the engine and allow approximately two minutes to elapse.

Next, access the oil level display by selecting either "Function selector button CAR > Oil level" or "Function selector button CAR > control button Car systems* > Servicing & checks > Oil level."

You can then view the oil level on the infotainment display, and if necessary, add more oil if the bar on the oil level display is close to the "min" mark. Bear in mind that your Audi A4's oil consumption may vary based on your driving habits and the conditions in which the vehicle is used. For this reason, it's recommended that you check the engine oil level frequently, preferably before commencing a journey or filling up the tank.

Additionally, please note that the oil level display is purely for informational purposes, and you'll receive an oil level warning on the instrument cluster if the oil level is too low. Finally, if you've opened the bonnet, the current oil level will be displayed on the instrument cluster the next time you switch on the ignition.

Where is the Audi A4 dip stick?

To check the oil level in your Audi A4, you won't find a dipstick under the hood. Instead, you'll have to refer to the center dash display. If you're changing the oil yourself, it's important to let the car sit for a couple of hours before beginning to avoid getting burned by hot oil.

First, locate the oil pan and drain plug in the engine compartment, and position a bucket beneath the plug to catch the old oil.

Allow the oil to drain completely, which may take up to an hour. Once it's done draining, replace the plug and locate the intake port on the top of the oil pan. Using a funnel, carefully add fresh oil to the pan, being sure not to overfill. It's okay to be a little under full, but overfilling can lead to oil leaks and burn off. Finally, close the port and clean up any spilled oil.
